Bernard Hopkins is a seasoned veteran who came from life as a troubled teen and built a successful boxing career with sheer determination and hard work. Bernard Hopkins rise to the top wasn't as fast and sudden as some young boxers rise to stardom, but his career reflects the blood and guts hard work that creates real champions. Bernard Hopkins joined the ranks of professional boxing in 1988, shortly after being paroled from a Pennsylvania prison. While in prison Hopkins had decided to turn his life around. He applied himself to getting his high school diploma and began to look at doing boxing. Bernard Hopkins made his professional debut on October 11, 1988, with a bout against boxer Clinton Mitchell. The fight ended with a loss for Bernard Hopkins, but his performance impressed trainer Bouie Fisher to work with him and train him.

Bernard Hopkins Boxing Career

Bernard Hopkins resurrected his boxing career by winning twenty fights between 1990 and 1992. This was an exciting time for Hopkins and was really beneficial in helping him develop as a fighter. Hopkins proved he packed a punch by winning fifteen of those twenty victories by knockout. On May 22, 1993, Bernard Hopkins had worked his way up to his first title shot against Roy Jones Jr. for the IBF title. Unfortunately, it would prove to be another disappointing loss for Hopkins. Hopkins lost to Roy Jones Jr. by a unanimous decision.

Bernard Hopkins next big opportunity came from an IBF title fight against Segundo Mercado. The fight was fierce and proved to be quite a challenge for Hopkins. Mercado had slugged away at Hopkins and sent him to the mat twice in the early parts of the match. Hopkins showed his immense determination by ferociously fighting to come back from his near defeat. The match ended up a draw. There was a rematch in April 1994, which saw Hopkins taking the win by knockout over Mercado in the seventh round.

After Bernard Hopkins took the title, he successfully defended it a total of twelve times. One particular title defense was brutal for Bernard Hopkins. The match was against Antwun Echols. In the sixth round Echols illegally took Hopkins down to the mat which injured his arm. Instead of taking the victory Hopkins wanted to fight on, and he won this battle by using mostly one arm, by knockout.

Another huge career moment was when Hopkins took on champion fighter Oscar de la Hoya in September 2004. Hopkins took a victory over de la Hoya and became the first boxer to hold all four sanctioning body titles. Bernard Hopkins joined de la Hoya's promotion team and now helps manage young boxers' careers. Hopkins is mostly handling boxers from his hometown of Philadelphia. Bernard Hopkins also had a career highlight by beating Antonio Tarver and winning the lightweight championship in one fight. Bernard Hopkins is scheduled to fight British champion Joe Calzaghe on April 19, 2008. Calzaghe will step up to the lightweight division for the fight against Bernard Hopkins.
