Ricardo "El Matador" Mayorga Boxing Career

By that time, only a few boxing fanatics thought Mayorga could continue to win by his ways, while most were of the opinion that he is only talk and no future. So when Mayorga went on to choose Vernon Forrest, the then ruling Boxing Writers Association of America 2002 Fighter of Year, to be his next challenger, not many people were wondering what would be the result. On the other hand, Forrest had defeated the "Sugar" Shane Mosley to become the World Boxing Council 147-pound champion.

But in January 2003, when Forrest and Mayorga finally came face to face with each other, and he knocked him down in the first round itself, Mayorga completely shocked the world. He was now the unified welterweight champion, along with Forrest's WBC crown too. People had now started taking Mayorga a bit more seriously.

One of the unusual tactics always associated with Mayorga, especially before and during his matches, are his loud talks, open challenges, taunts and making faces. When he decided to fight the International Boxing Federation champion Cory Spinks in December 2003, Mayorga was now was planning to become the undeniable world welterweight champion. But Spinks was much too clever to avoid much of Mayorga's control, thus winning a very close majority verdict.

In October 2004, Mayorga decided it was to move up to full middleweight and face one of the unprecedented boxers of the boxing world, Felix Trinidad. Trinidad too on the other hand had been retired for 29 months and decided to return to the boxing ring against the "El Matador". Mayorga, who had not tasted much defeat before fought fearlessly but was forced to the canvas many times by Trinidad. But, Mayorga didn't give up and the fight continued until the referee stepped in to stop. Mayorga also took on Michele Piccirillo, the former IBF welterweight champion, for the available title. Mayorga held up a great fight against the former champion to easily become a two-division world champion.

Luis Leon is the man who trains Mayorga today while Monarch Sports Management, headed by Carl King is the firm that manages him. Mayorga believes that his most important fights were the ones against Diosbelys Hurtado and Marco Avendano which were held on Nov. 27, 1999 and March 18, 2000 respectively. He still feels that these were his best two fights which earned him a spot in the world's best boxer rankings.
