Roy Jones Boxing Career

Roy Jones Jr. made his professional boxing debut on the 6th May, 1989, at the Pensacola Civic Centre, against Ricky Randall. Jones easily took over Randall and proved himself the winner by round 2. As Jones was his own manager, he decided to set up a promotional group named Square Ring Inc. and decided to take a shot at the available world title for IBF Middleweight (160lb). Jones chose to take the great Bernard Hopkins to be his contender. Although Jones came into the ring with a broken right hard, he went on to win a unanimous decision, to win his first world title.

Jones then decided to win his next big title by challenging IBF super middleweight champion James 'Lights Out' Toney. All the critics at that time predicted Toney as an undoubted winner, as he was one of the best pounds for pound fighters in the world. Jones, on the other hand, went into the ring as a sure loser for them all, only to defy all their myths and win a unanimous decision, making Jones a two time world champion. On June 15, 1996, Jones went ahead to defend his IBF super middleweight title, and then proceeded to score a fantastic achievement of playing a minor league professional basketball game to defend his boxing world title, both on the same day.

A little later, Jones put up a great fight to successfully defeat his contender Reggie Johnson and win the match by a 12 round decision, on June 5, 1999, to claim for the undisputed- WBA, WBC and IBF- light heavyweight championship of the world. Jones then decided to take the vital push of his career by announcing to the world that he would be fighting for the heavyweight championship of the world against WBA champion John Ruiz. And again, staying true to his claim, Jones defeated Ruiz by an undisputed decision, to receive the heavyweight world title.

Eventually, Jones became the first middleweight to claim the heavyweight title in over 100 years, and also, a four division world champion. Jones suffered the first loss of his professional career as he got knocked down in the second round by Antonio Tarver. Jones then also went on to bear two more losses, one against Glengoffe Johnson and the other again against Tarver, during his third fight with him.
