Busch was also the 2nd best finisher in the car sport event's closest finish in history; held on the tracks of Darlington Raceway on the 16th of March 2003. After such an explosive but exciting 2-lap race with Ricky Craven around the 1.366-mile track, Craven embraced the finish line with just 0.002 seconds before Busch crossed in the photo-finish. Busch was a NASCAR AutoZone Elite Division competitor in the Southwest Series who gained his 1st national recognition at Tucson Raceway Park while competing against the likes of Matt Crafton, Ron Hornaday, Chris Trickle, Greg Biffle and Kevin Harvick among in the 1998 Winter Heat Series. Busch got a long break after an unfortunate incident. Chris Trickle was killed in a mysterious shooting although he died a year later due to the injuries he sustained but the murderer was never caught.

So the Star Nursery team had to look for a new driver who would replace the Late Trickle for the #70 team. Busch then inherited the team's ride and went ahead to win the 1999 championship for AutoZone Elite Division Southwest Series. This led to a Roush Racing "Gong Show" tryout which he also won and earned himself a ride in the Craftsman Truck Series. At the age of 22, Busch began his car racing career in 2000 on the Winston Cup circuit. A month after he clocked his 21st birthday, he ran his 1st race in a Winston Cup Series in Dover. Busch drove in 7 car races although with no wins, top fives or top tens, and later finished 48th that year. However, the following years brought out Kurt Busch's true worth as a NASCAR driver.
