From its inception till date, the NEXTEL cup series has witnessed series of transformations. Among all NASCAR's racing series, NEXTEL has enjoyed the top positions for ages, and since its bona fide name: Strictly Stock Series. Originally known as Strictly Stock Series in 1949, NEXTEL was renamed the Grand National Series from 1950 through 1971, and yet renamed the Winston Cup Series between 1972 & 2003 before it got its present name from 2003 - 2007. Surprisingly, with effect from 2008 onward, it will be known as the Sprint Cup Series. Below is a breakdown of Nextel's brief history from its formation in 1949. Upon being brought into existence in 1949, NASCAR begun an 8-race Strictly Stock division run on the Daytona beach course as well as the 7 different dirt ovals.
