The dirt-surfaced ovals were used earlier until 1951 when Daytona International Speedway was commissioned; the both are still in use till date. Although, the Strictly Stock division is considered as NASCAR's first season of the Grand National Cup, it cannot erase the fact that later in 1950, the name Grand National was substituted for the Strictly Stock division and was popularly known as that for the whole of the seasons through 1971. The Grand National Cup was full of racing activities with some weekends hosting more about two - three NASCAR car races. 1972 saw a different sponsorship program availed for NEXTEL as R.J. Reynolds Tobacco shouldered the renamed Winston Cup Series' sponsorship responsibilities.Some U.S. laws later marred this sponsorship when legislation was passed to put a check on the advertising of tobacco products.

The crises that evolved in this era brought about some changes in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series when in 1974, Bob Latford introduced a point system of awarding equal points to all races without consideration for neither length nor prize money. However, earlier remarkable changes saw races on dirt tracks removed from the schedule and the season consuming a shorter period among others. From 1975, Latford's point system became very useful through the 2004 season. NASCAR didn't find it difficult getting NEXTEL to sponsor the Cup series in 2003 when R.J. Reynolds called it quits with the sponsorship of the top series. The merger of NEXTEL telecommunications with Sprint in 2005 is perhaps the reason why the Cup Series will be renamed the Sprint Cup Series with effect from the 2008 season. A wide variety of race tracks that vary in length and terrain are used for Nextel Cup Series.
