Olympic Sports
The current Olympic Sports program consists of 35 sports with 53 disciplines and more than 400 events. The Summer Olympics include 28 sports with 38 disciplines, and the Winter Olympics include 7 sports with 15 disciplines. Each Olympic Sport is represented by the International Federation (IF). Of course the International Olympic Committee is responsible for deeming which sports are eligible to be competed in the Olympic Games and choose which are the most important by going over many different aspects of each sport and athlete skill required to conduct the sport at Olympic levels. A sport or discipline has the opportunity to be included in the summer or winter Olympic Games if the IOC (International Olympic Committee) sees that the sport is popular world wide and actively participated in as well. The number of countries throughout the world which participate in any particular sport conclude just how popular the sport really is and bring it to the attention of the IOC. To be able to be competed at the Olympics, for instance, an event must be practiced by men in at least, fifty countries on three continents, and by women in at least thirty-five countries on three continents.
